2008 Programs:

20050311111114.jpg CONDUCTOR'S RETREAT AT MEDOMAK
July 2 - 20, 2008 marks the twelfth annual Conductors Retreat at Medomak. This unique summer program offered a safe, non-competitive environment for both novice and veteran conductors to learn skills and techniques that will influence them throughout their musical lives. Founder and director, Kenneth Kiesler (director of orchestras and professor of conducting at the School of Music of the University of Michigan), also a Medomak Camp alumnus, shares with his students not only a love of music, but a deep appreciation for the New England landscape. At Medomak conductors, ranging in age from sixteen to sixty, have the ability to be successful at their art in front contemporaries but without the scrutiny of the public all the while under Kiesler's passionate analysis.

The culmination of the retreat will be a public concert highlighting the participants conducting skills as well as a large chorus of experienced singers. Each summer the conductors join a professional orchestra for a rare Maine performance at Medomak. The concert is free to the public. However, call ahead for time and directions. For more information, visit www.conductorsretreat.org.

20050311111622.jpg READING THE LANDSCAPE: A CONNECTION TO PLACE July 28 - August 2, 2008
Tom Wessels guides us in Reading the Landscape: A Connection to Place. Professor of Ecology in the Department of Environmental Studies at Antioch New England Graduate School, Wessels is also the author of Reading the Landscape: A Natural History of New England and Reading the Granite Landscape: A Natural History of America's Mountain Domes from Acadia to Yosemite and The Myth of Progress Toward a Sustainable Future. In the course of this seminar, participants will explore a variety of forest, wetland, and mountain communities in mid-coast Maine including the granite domes of Acadia National Park. It is a wonderful learning opportunity for science teachers, environmentalists, nature writers and lovers of the New England Landscape.
